I have been using single channel amps for the last 5-6 years now, mostly due to traveling all over the world and having to use whatever amps were available at the time. My go to rental is an AC30 because they are almost everywhere, and even though they are extremely inconsistent, with the normal channel set completely clean, I can always find the sound I am after using the pedals on my board. In the US I have been using Bad Cat amplifiers for more than 15 years, many which are modded version of old AC30 amps. Since I switched to getting my distortion from pedals, I no longer use the gain channels in those amps. I modeled DIST to give me exactly what I needed to turn the clean channel into the high gain channel with more control and consistency than I have ever had. I really have never looked back or missed using the amp gain; In fact it has opened up the possibility of using a much wider variety of amps and still getting the sound that I’m after, anywhere in the world.
